2009 BAJAJ PULSAR 220 DTSi REVIEW

"Pulsar - definitely male", Don't you remember this caption? The introduction of Pulsar in the Indian market was a revolutionary leap for the Bajaj autos. The Pulsar was the 1st 150cc bike in the premium segment. Pulsar's victory made Bajaj one of the top two wheeler manufacturers in India. Though many other models were introduced in the market by Bajaj, none of them could get the demand equal to that of Pulsar. Bajaj continued to improvize the Pulsar series and many successors came for the Pulsar 150. First came the Pulsar 150 DTSi, then came Pulsar 180 DTSi, then Pulsar 200 DTSi and so on. This year Bajaj introduced another successor, Pulsar 220 DTS Fi. Then came the "Fastest Indian" Pulsar 220 DTSi. Bajaj hasn't disappointed the Pulsar fans. The new Pulsar also comes with outstanding features. Want to know more???

Design & Styling

The new Pulsar 220 DTSi and Pulsar 220 DTS Fi have no visible dissimilarities. The only visible difference is the Logo name. All Pulsar features such as digital speedometer, split grab rail, clip-on handle bar, 3D logo etc are retained in the new Pulsar 220 DTSi. There is no change in the exhaust portion of the bike also. Bajaj's exhaust-tec technology is used in this model also. The silencer is also equipped with catalytic converter.
Apart from the speedometer and tachometer, the digital instrument panel also contains 2 trip meters. The Pulsar 220 DTSi has side stand indicators, hazard indicators, oil & fuel indicators as well. The Pulsar 220 DTSi also contains automatic indicators as in cars. The Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTSi is available in 4 colors:Red, Blue, Black and Silver.

Technical Specifications

Compared to the Bajaj Pulsar DTS Fi with Fuel Injection support, the Pulsar 220 DTSi's engine is more powerful. The maximum power generated by the 4 stroke, single cylinder, aircooled engine is 20.71 bhp @ 8500 rpm. The maximum torque is 19 Nm @ 7000 rpm. The veturi carburetor with Carb controlled variable ignition replaces the Fuel Injection facility. The ignition is microprocessor controlled digital CDI.
The Pulsar 220 DTSi with white sump, forced lubrication, has 5-speed constant mesh transmission which reduces the chance of false neutral. The front suspension of the bike is telescopic fork with 130mm stroke. The rear suspension is trailing arm with coaxial gas assisted Hydraulic shock absorbers and coil springs. The Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTSi doesn't have kick start facility as in other premium segment bikes. Tubeless tyre and O-ring type chain are other notable features in 220 DTSi.

Drive

The Pulsar 220 DTSi has much more power than Pulsar 220 DTS Fi. The telescopic fork, gas charged suspension and tubeless tyres offer greater travel comfort. The tyres made in soft compound are used in 220 DTSi to assure improved road grip at higher speeds. The weight of the bike helps to keep it stable at higher speeds. The journey at the back seat is also comfortable.
The Bajaj claims that Pulsar 220 DTSi has a top speed of 144kmh.

Mileage
Bajaj offers a mileage of 40-45km/L for Pulsar 220 DTSi. The fuel tank capacity is 15L. The reserve capacity is 3.2 L

Price
Cochin Ex-showroom price - Rs. 73,590

Hi Deepak, nice post.
I wish to know 2 or 3 thing. I will ask them in points so that u find it easy to reply.

1. the cost of pulsar 220 DTSi in Trivandrum is 77,715.. is it too much ? because it is only 73,590 in Cochin (as per your blog)

2. Lot of people are saying that after sales service such as servicing, parts and such things are cheap and not reliable.
is it so ?

3. I am thinking of buying 220 dtsi..i want power...can u suggest any other bike with similar specifications and reliability?

5. in the magazine given by pulsar it is given Max. Power = 21.04 @8500 (Ps@ RPM) is this the same as BHP ??
I am confused...

Please let me know...thanks....

Hello kickass
Thanks for u'r comment.
Let me clear u'r doubts 1 by one
1. The prices may vary from place to place. In my post i've given the rate at Cochin. The change in price may be due 2 various reasons such as transportation cost etc. For eg. the price of Pulsor 220 in major cities such as Mumbai and Delhi are around Rs.70,000. There is not much to worry in slight variation in price.

2. In a country like India where there are many strong competetors like hero honda, honda, yamaha etc. how can a manufacturer get the top position if their services are not reliable??? In my experience, the services of Bajaj is trustable as any other manufacturers in India.

3. If u prefer power, the best option is 220 itself, because even when Yamaha R15 has a power of 17 PS @ 8500 rpm, the 220 offers a max.power of 21.04 PS @ 8500 rpm

4. PS stands for "pferdestarke". It is almost same as BHP. ie, 1PS is approximately equal to 1 BHP.

Hope the reply helped 2 clarify u'r doubts.

I am all set to go in for P220.

Good evenning Janmejay, the Pulsar 220 DTSi is coming with electric start models only, and no kick start option is available. The pulsar 220 like other premium sector bikes doesn't include kick start option in it

Hi Deepak,

Thanks again for replying to my earlier post.
(Again I will put my query in points)

I got my black Pulsar 220. Its been 2 days now. I just wanted to know about the running in period.

1) As per manual I am maintaining it below 60 Km/hr (and also keeping RPM below 3000).
But it is also written that I should NOT ride at a constant speed and I should change it ...that means I need to change the gear constantly right ? Is that correct ? Wont that do damage than good ??

2) when I ride in the 5th gear at 55 km/hr the engine stars making sound (demanding more acceleration) what should I do ? I cant exceed 60 km(because of running in)and I should also be changing gears for proper engine functioning. I am in a fix.

3) Is pillion riding advisable during running in period?

Please let me know..
Thanks

Hi All,

I own this ferocious machine..Its superb handling and excellent shockers make the journey a fun ride..Amazing thing about this bike is that its pick-up doubles after crossing 60 km/h..I faced some problems with gears getting stuck initially but after 100-150 kam that problem also vanished..All together a wonderfull bike to own..Totally worth its cost.

Hey i bought a new 220 DTTSI Pulsar on 25th january '10 and I have seen the servicing part. I mean first servicing is done and I got a chance to see that, and i am not happy with the service. Because it is free service and only amount for oil is paid they are changing only oil. Head light beam is going up in the air. Projector lamps are very powerful I can see it focusing till 70 meters but byt the time it reaches that 70 Mts it is focused on 3rd floor. Till date they did not fix this issue. Also I am facing starting problem. I crossed 800km on it. now it started vibrating when i am below 20 kmph also when applying break. This is not the problem of bike problem with service center.... these people are spoiling it. seriously waiting for paid services. at least they start making it good. Instead of fighting I am waiting for paid services.

Unknown said...

Hi all I mentioned that i faced lot of problems with serving centre.... all of them got resolved by email to the bajaj Customer care (email ID given on the book that was given when bike was delivered) service centre manager called me and asked me to come to the service centre to get all of the issues rectified. and Manager himself spoke to me to understand whats the issues was and got all of them fixed.... Now iam happy... For people who are used too corporate work all that I did was esclated the issues to the next level and got it fixed...

Hi Shekhar , many told me that mileage is less than 25KMPL I was looking for performance bike so decided to have this one only. Because I am like speeding I never look for mileage but My 220 DTSI which was bought on 25th jan was giving 27 KMPL I checked it twice but later I never checked it again.I started filling the tank til its max capacity and again filling it once its empty... If you love performance vehicle just go for it never look for Mileage.

hi...
i own a pulsar 180.. 1 year old bike i keep the proper maintenance of my bike but still it is giving too much problems of average, gears getting stuck off, noise coming from diffrent parts everyday and ofcouse vibration at slow speed..

nw i am planning to buy a bike these days and want a sporty look bike ..
but let me tell that i don't use bike in city very much i use it in highway mostly i just drive 8-9 km daily in city ....
but still the average of bike matters..
1. which bike would u like to prefer for highways..
2. i am confused between hero honda stunner, hunk, karizma zmr, pulsar 220 or yamaha r15...
3. which is more comfortable in riding with less problems after 8 or 9 months...
4. last but not least which is more powerful bike in ur views which can touch a high speed easily....

Deepak said...

Dear Roadster,
If you prefer less maintenance than performance, then u should go for Hero Honda Karizma ZMR, Yamaha R15 & Honda Stunner. I would prefer Karizma ZMR bcoz in my experience, Herohonda bikes needed less maintenance than others, I would say Yamaha is also not bad. But if u prefer performance, then u should go for Pulsar 220!!!!!!
Riding comfort is good in the case of Karizma, R15 and Pulsar

roadster said...

thanks deepak for ur guidence but as i told u earlier that i had many many problems in my old 180 cc pulsar...

according to the technical point of view the pulsar is a good bike since zmr claims the speed of only 120 km/hr but the pulsar claims the speed of 138km/hr ..
but the main problem is with the brand bajaj not fixing the problems of old bike properly as hero honda still do some little efforts for their old customers...
well i am totally lost in the battle between pulsar and zmr ...
u just simply suggest me one bike and then i will just go for it ..

Hi Roadster & Deeepak,

I am Deepak. I am using Pulsar 220 dtSi and I guess you noticed that S is capital, Yes I want you to notice it. My bike is a kind of limited edition fortunately. No idea about DTSFI but mine is too good I loved it. I never felt bad for investing 82K in hyderabad for it. EXCEPT WHILE TAKING A U TURN and while PARKING IN CROWDED PLACE, however I am prepared for it.
I bought it on 25th of Jan because its DTSI Bajaj gave 4 free services and all are done on time. couple of times I have problem with service centres in Hyderabad but I took a vice decision by contacting customercare(email id taken from Manual) I used pulsar 150 2004 manufactured and fell in love with bike riding and 220 DTSI to a way fulfilled by want of having a sports bike.
Before I decided to purchase 220 I did a detailed investigation in internet and also based on friend's openion and ended up buying 220 and always happy with it.

Always remember, before deciding which one to go for, Decide what u need actually.

Example: I need top Speed and pick up/acceleration.

After drilling down to certain extent I ended up with 2 options R15 and P220.

P220 82K
R15 110K
P220 21 BHP
R15 17 BHP
To make R15 to 21 BHP U need to pay 20K more(sports Kit) check with yamaha showroom.

R15 average Appro. 40 and 220 also 40.

R15 u have to accelarate up 4500 rpm to shift the gears and P220 needs less than 3500 rpm.

R15 has 6 gears P220 has only 5( I am happy with 5)

I never cared about looks. However R15 rear wheel dissappointed me.

R15 handling is better than P220 because P220 153 Kgs and R15 is just 135kgs (my opening but not invertigation done to know this.)

I guess you understood why I decided to take P220 instead of R15.
But beleive me If u have no problem investing 110K approximately then you may go for R15 beause no R15 users feel bad for taking it. I did not investigate abt yamaha servicing, however I came accross some incidents about spares not being available in banglore I guess for R15. If u want to got for R15 make a detailed investigation on the spares as well.

Let me know What you have decided. Its important for my analasys.

Remember 2 things today ont the streets only people with R15 always give me tough compitation but still P220 with the race.

2nd thing Recently I stopped racing with bike and I started racing with Maruti Swift. Understanding that the pick up and top speed is unlike any other bikes but only cars match with it.
P220 gives very tough compitation to swift but it may not with if the car driver is efficient.

Forgot to tell you about mileage

http://www.bikedekho.com/bajaj/bajaj-pulsar-220-dtsi.html
go through second paragraph last sentence. I experienced it dude. I saw literally 47kmpl when I was in hyderabad. now moved to visakhapatnam and it came down to 30 or 35 most of the times it fluctuate so badly from 20 to 40 kmpl dude. its all because most of the times I rome around in the city and I dont get a chance to step up to the fourth gear. cause it needs more than 40kmph to step up to 4th gear and 55 to 60kmph+ to move to 5th gear.
and 65 to 75 or less than 80KMPH gives you very good mileage.

I am telling you what I experienced with my Pulsar 220 CC DTSI and not DTSFI.

Need any help any clarifications post a comment.

Every bike has its own detailed descriptions I described what I understood but not to target Karizma, R15, Xtream, Apache bike users.
